Commenting on the recent $1.65 billion multi-deal to develop world-class infrastructure for the eco-friendly transportation system in the country, Qatar’s Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti remarked that the contracts will boost the country’s private sector.
“Signing contracts with pioneering private sector companies to establish essential infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) emphasizes Qatar’s support to the private sector. These deals will create a lot of opportunities for the country’s private sector to take part in transportation projects,” Mr. Al Sulaiti observed while speaking to the media amid the signing ceremony.
The minister added that the contracts prove the Qatar government’s commitment to enhance the role of private firms in national projects.
Qatar has been ramping up its efforts to introduce electric modes of transport as it heads to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
Fahad Saad Al Qahtani, CEO of Mowasalat, one of the major transport services providers in Qatar remarked that “Qatar’s transport sector is witnessing a breakthrough in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022. We are currently purchasing 3,000 new buses for the FIFA World Cup 2022, which will then be added to the company’s fleet to build a legacy for public and school transport. They also form an integral part of our transport fleet for major events that will be hosted by the State of Qatar in the future.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) also reinforced its earlier claims that more than 25 percent of the public transit bus fleet in Qatar will become electric by the end of 2022.
