The UAE has ranked in the top 20 nations globally in the fixed broadband index with the fastest average download speeds in May 2021 according to the latest data from Ookla, a global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data, and analysis.

In May 2021, UAE achieved an average download speed of 180 Mbps, up from 125 Mbps in January 2021, according to the fixed broadband Speedtest™ data. This significant growth was primarily due to Etisalat and du’s corporate program and activities in 2021 to improve the UAE’s fixed broadband ranking.

This resulted in a huge increase in the UAE’s broadband ranking, which jumped 12 positions from 28th in January 2021 to 16th in May 2021, placing it among the top 20 countries globally, while the UAE was ranked first in the wider Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.

“This global achievement is a testimony to UAE leadership’s vision and commitment in bringing the country to the forefront taking a lead in the ICT sector while being the most advanced country in digital transformation,” Mr. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director-General of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), said.

As the UAE approaches the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and the fourth industrial revolution, fast speeds on the fixed broadband network are a requirement for delivering the best and most advanced services.

This is also a significant contributor to a nation’s well-being, economic wealth, and social prosperity. Etisalat and du have worked hard to provide the finest customer experience possible, with the world’s highest penetration of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connection and a network that is constantly being modernized to provide best-in-class telecom services.

The Speedtest Global index evaluates over 135 nations, compares internet speed data from around the world on a regular basis. The index is based on the hundreds of millions of tests conducted each month by real people taking the speed test.
