Saudi Arabia’s Jazan Region has launched a tropical fruits and greenhouses project with investments exceeding $160 million (SAR600 million) to support agricultural development, food security, and private sector investment.
The project was inaugurated by Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Mohammed bin Abdulaziz, the Governor of Jazan Region and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Jazan Region Development Strategic Office.
Governor Abdulaziz said that the initiative aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by diversifying the economy, enhancing food security, and increasing the agricultural sector’s contribution to national economic growth.
Advanced agricultural technologies
The project is among the largest protected agriculture developments in the region. It is being implemented by Amtar Al Khair Agricultural Crops Company in partnership with Dutch greenhouse technology company KUBO to introduce advanced smart farming and greenhouse technologies to the Saudi market.
The collaboration facilitates technology transfer, improve agricultural productivity, and strengthen the competitiveness of the region’s agricultural sector through the adoption of modern farming practices.
The project is part of the strategic office’s efforts to attract international expertise and support investment partnerships in the agricultural sector.
One million square meter development
The development spans one million square meters, comprising 500,000 square meters of high-tech greenhouses and another 500,000 square meters dedicated to tropical fruit cultivation.
The project is expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs while encouraging investment across agricultural value chains, contributing to regional economic growth and expanding opportunities in the sector.
It will use advanced protected agriculture systems, including smart greenhouse climate control, closed-loop irrigation systems, and water recycling technologies.
These technologies reduce water consumption by up to 75 percent and improve the efficient use of natural resources in line with sustainability objectives.
