The USA’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved two disinfectant sprays that can kill novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19, on surfaces.
EPA announced that two versions of the common household disinfectant spray Lysol were lab tested and where found they could kill the virus on surfaces. Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist priced at $4.18 and $5.48 respectively can kill the virus in under 2 minutes, the agency found.
Andrew Wheeler, EPA Administrator stated that “EPA is committed to identifying new tools and providing accurate and up-to-date information to help the American public protect themselves and their families from the novel coronavirus.”
An EPA spokesperson had earlier stated that companies had to demonstrate their products are effective against viruses that are even “harder-to-kill” than the novel coronavirus. Lysol is the first surface disinfectant approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to wipe out the coronavirus.
Rahul Kadyan, Executive Vice President of hygiene for Lysol’s parent company Reckitt Benckiser” said that “The EPA’s approval recognizes that using Lysol Disinfectant Spray can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on hard, non-porous surfaces.”
“In the face of the pandemic, Lysol continues to work with a wide range of scientific and health experts to educate the public on the importance of hygiene.”
In March, the EPA had released a list of household cleaners that could kill coronavirus because they have been tested and proven to work against similar viruses. The revelation led to shortages at many local grocery stores.
