Taibah University has registered a new patent for an innovative technology, ‘Flexpen’, designed to address the challenge of accurately delivering doses of sensitive semisolid pharmaceutical formulations.

The Flexpen technology is designed with the primary goal of enhancing patient safety, minimizing the wastage of medications, and boosting overall operational efficiency within the healthcare sector. By addressing key challenges in medication delivery, the Flexpen supports improved healthcare outcomes and more sustainable medical practices.

This advanced technology, which has been officially patented by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, incorporates a dual-cylinder mechanism. The first cylinder serves the purpose of storing and administering the medication using an integrated ejection piston mechanism.

The second cylinder is uniquely equipped with a digitally controlled calibration system, which allows for extremely precise dosage adjustments, ensuring optimal delivery tailored to patient needs.

Among the Flexpen’s defining characteristics are its high degree of accuracy in dosage measurement, the ability to be reused for multiple applications, and its adaptability to accommodate medications with a wide range of viscosity levels. Additionally, the device is noted for its straightforward and cost-effective manufacturing process, as well as its consistent and dependable performance in practical healthcare settings.

This accomplishment is the outcome of a dedicated, collaborative research initiative and underscores the university’s commitment to fostering innovation in the medical field. It aligns closely with the institution’s broader vision of promoting sustainable development in medical manufacturing, supporting applied scientific research, and contributing to progress in critical sectors.

The university emphasized that the Flexpen technology is in harmony with the strategic objectives of healthcare transformation as outlined in Saudi Vision 2030. It exemplifies the university’s capacity to translate rigorous academic research into effective, real-world technological solutions that benefit both the broader community and the national healthcare system.
