The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Oman has launched the Drone Labs project, establishing three specialized laboratories for drone programming and manufacturing across its campuses in Muscat, Al Musannah, and Nizwa to strengthen innovation, research, and national talent development.
The initiative gives students across the university’s branches direct access to hands-on training in one of the fastest-growing technology fields, supporting practical learning in unmanned aerial systems and advanced digital technologies.
The drone labs project marks a significant step in advancing technical education and scientific research by equipping students with practical skills in drone programming, manufacturing, operation, and control. The laboratories are designed to foster research, innovation, and applied learning while preparing qualified national talent capable of meeting evolving labor market demands in emerging technology sectors.
The Drone Labs project laboratories are jointly supervised by the university’s Electronic Systems and Student Services Sector and the Executive Committee for Digital Transformation Initiatives, creating a practical learning environment that aligns academic education with industry requirements and market needs.
The drone labs project is supported by the Digital Transformation Program, which focuses on developing national capabilities, accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies, and creating an innovation-driven ecosystem.
The initiative also contributes to strengthening the foundations of the national digital economy by encouraging technology development and applied research.
The new drone laboratories enhance the University’s research infrastructure by providing students with access to advanced drone manufacturing and autonomous flight technologies in state-of-the-art facilities.
The drone labs project reinforces the university’s commitment to integrating education, scientific research, and innovation, while equipping students with future-ready skills to support the country’s technological and economic development.
