Khalidiyah Park, a community-favorite green space in Abu Dhabi, has officially reopened following a comprehensive redevelopment led by the Department of Municipality and Transport (DMT).
The extensive modernization, covering over 62,000 square meters, was designed to foster a balanced lifestyle combining exercise, leisure, and social interaction for residents of all ages.
At the heart of the renovation is a 660-meter enclosed cooled walkway linking different zones of the park, featuring integrated rest areas to encourage year-round outdoor activity.
The redesigned layout, aligned with the Emirate’s Year of Family, also enhances accessibility for senior citizens and People of Determination, ensuring an inclusive urban space.

“This reflects our forward-thinking approach to urban design, offering visitors access to a diverse range of recreational activities. We were very conscious of Khalidiyah Park’s history and emotional value to the community, so every decision focused on balancing modernity with a sense of familiarity. Its central location and importance to residents required us to ensure the park continues to positively contribute to quality of life for years to come.”
The upgraded park now features walking and jogging tracks, two multi-use games areas, football and handball courts, and five children’s play zones, including a sand play area.
A new amphitheater will host community events and performances, while the central park zone and a ‘sunken garden’ with ambient lighting serve as natural gathering spaces for visitors.
Sustainability and environmental efficiency were central to the redevelopment. Native trees and drought-tolerant species were planted to reduce water consumption, high-efficiency irrigation systems were installed, and smart LED lighting now reduces energy use.
The use of permeable surfaces and carefully selected materials helps maintain cooler microclimates while minimizing long-term maintenance requirements.
The Khalidiyah Park transformation underscores the DMT’s commitment to Abu Dhabi’s Liveability Strategy, which recently allocated $11.4 billion (AED 42 billion) for initiatives aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure, public amenities, and community well-being across the emirate.
