The Cyber Security Council (CSC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has warned that approximately 25 percent of publicly accessible files contain sensitive personal data, urging users to follow safer practices when sharing files online.

In its weekly message as part of the ‘Cyber Pulse’ awareness campaign, the Cyber Security Council stressed the importance of responsible digital behavior to minimize exposure to cyber risks and threats.

The Cyber Security Council highlighted encryption and secure account management as key cybersecurity practices, noting that protecting files transmitted over the internet helps prevent unauthorized access and contributes to a safer digital environment.

It also emphasized the importance of managing access permissions and monitoring file usage, pointing out that between 68 percent and 77 percent of privately shared files could still be accessed by unintended users.

According to the Cyber Security Council, cloud storage alone does not guarantee automatic protection, making encryption essential for safeguarding sensitive information. The CSC outlined several recommended measures, including using strong and regularly updated passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, avoiding public links for sensitive files, and reviewing privacy settings.

Additional advice includes deleting unused files and links, securing Wi-Fi networks, keeping devices and software up to date, reviewing app permissions, and using virtual private networks when accessing public networks.

The Cyber Security Council also stressed the importance of backing up data and ensuring secure database management on cloud platforms. It concluded by underscoring the need to strengthen cybersecurity awareness at the individual level, noting that many risks arise from simple actions that can be prevented through basic precautions.

Now in its second year, the ‘Cyber Pulse’ campaign is part of broader national efforts to enhance cybersecurity awareness and support a safe and sustainable digital transformation in the UAE.
