The Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has launched a comprehensive infrastructure and road expansion project on the E20 highway to improve traffic flow and accommodate increasing transport demand in Khalifa City.
The project includes widening the E20 highway from three lanes to five, increasing capacity for vehicles traveling between Khalifa City and Zayed International Airport.
DMT said that the expansion improves traffic movement, reduces congestion, and supports the emirate’s growing mobility requirements.
As part of the project, 10.5 kilometers of additional ramps and loops will be constructed, along with four new bridges, to improve access and facilitate smoother vehicle movement along the highway.
The scope of work also includes the construction of 1.5 kilometers of internal roads and the installation of eight signalized intersections across Khalifa City and the Zayed International Airport area. These upgrades improve connectivity between residential communities, commercial areas, and the airport.
In addition to the road works, the project includes landscaping along the E20 corridor. Trees will be relocated and replanted where required as part of efforts to preserve the surrounding environment while enhancing green spaces.
The supporting infrastructure will also be upgraded through the construction of 62 kilometers of stormwater drainage networks, 37 kilometers of irrigation networks, and the installation of 485 streetlights to support the expanded road network.
According to DMT, the E20 expansion forms part of Abu Dhabi’s ongoing infrastructure development program to improve transport efficiency, increase road capacity, and support future urban growth. The project provides more efficient access to Zayed International Airport and nearby communities.
The department emphasized that the highway upgrade reflects continued investment in transport infrastructure to meet the mobility requirements of residents, businesses, and visitors as traffic volumes continue to grow across the emirate.
