Dubai Economy’s “IP Gateway” gains recognition with global brand listings

Dubai Economy’s Commercial Compliance & Consumer Protection (CCCP) sector has witnessed numerous international brands utilizing its ‘IP Gateway,’ the digital platform created by it to protect intellectual property (IP) rights as well as trademarks and commercial agencies.

CCCP’s IP Gateway has seen 69 active commercial agency filings along with 5,225 active trademark files by the end of 2020, a respective growth of 38 percent and 1 percent when compared to 2019.

The portal plays a significant role in establishing the emirate as a competitive hub and smart city enabling sustainable business development.

Sharing his insights about the filings, Mr. Ibrahim Behzad, Director of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Department in CCCP stated that an extremely diverse portfolio of global brands and commercial agencies are seeking to benefit from the protection offered by the portal.

“US trademarks had the largest share (31 percent) of active files on the portal at the end of 2020, followed by Emirati (13 percent), French (7 percent), German (6.4 percent), and British brands (5.8 percent). However, Denmark accounted for the highest increase of 42 percent in trademark files followed by British Virgin Islands (29 percent), while the number of French files rose 16 percent to reach 370, and British files went up by 14 percent to reach 205,” Mr. Behzad pointed out.

IP Infringement Complaints 

The IP Gateway has seen 292 complaints relating to IP infringements and 27 related to the rights of commercial agencies being made to the Dubai Economy in 2020. The portal had processed 298 complaints relating to IP infringements and 35 related to the rights of commercial agencies in 2019.

“Swiss trademarks accounted for the largest number of IP infringement complaints (61), followed by US (54), Emirati (48), German (33), and French (31) trademarks. Product-wise, clothing accounted for the largest share (39) complaints, jewelry, as well as phones and accessories, had a share of 33 each, 29 were about watches, and 24 were related to perfumes,” the Director of IPR Department revealed.

Dubai Economy’s IP Gateway 

The IP Gateway portal can be accessed by any Trademarks and IP owner as well as commercial agency to open a file and submit their complaints relating to infringements in Dubai. All IP transactions are completed smartly through the IP Gateway without the need for customers to visit Dubai Economy

The IP Gateway app is available on the Apple, Google and Huawei stores with support for Arabic, English, Japanese, French, and Italian languages.
