The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology today opened the ‘Liwa Dual Carriageway Link’ in North Al Batinah Governorate, marking a significant milestone in enhancing regional connectivity and supporting smoother traffic movement in the area.

The newly inaugurated 5.5-km Liwa Dual Carriageway Link connects Liwa Roundabout on Sultan Qaboos Road with the Al Batinah Expressway interchange, replacing the previous single-lane route with a modern dual carriageway. The upgraded stretch now features two lanes in each direction and a 22.1m-wide road cross-section.

The Liwa Dual Carriageway project was carried out through four main operations. These included converting the existing road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, featuring a 22.1-metre cross-section to accommodate higher traffic volumes.

It also involved the construction of two new roundabouts to improve traffic circulation, the development of dedicated entry and exit routes to enhance accessibility, and the addition of service roads on both sides of the main road to further ease congestion and support smoother traffic flow for local communities.

The Liwa Dual Carriageway project was implemented in accordance with standard specifications. the dual carriageway incorporates comprehensive traffic safety features, including protective barriers, directional signage, road markings and lighting poles.

Scheduled to facilitate traffic between the center of the Wilayat of Liwa and nearby villages, the Liwa Dual Carriageway enhance commercial activity and serve road users. It will provide smoother movement between Liwa town center and its surrounding villages while improving connectivity for users heading to Sohar Port and the Free Zone. The ministry also expects the enhanced link to stimulate commercial activity and support wider economic growth across North Batinah.
