PureHealth, the Middle East’s largest healthcare group, has launched a smart energy project with EPX to cut over 36,000 tonnes of CO₂, equal to taking 6,500 cars off the road in seven years.

The new energy efficiency and monitoring initiative further aims to reduce annual energy consumption by more than 13 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) across PureHealth’s UAE healthcare network, enough to power a 50-bed hospital for over a year.

This partnership brings advanced intelligence to healthcare operations through artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Leveraging EPX’s AI-driven EDGE platform, PureHealth will collect and analyze billions of data points annually from sensors installed across 10 major facilities, including SEHA, SEHA Clinics, and The Medical Office (TMO).

The smart energy project forms a core part of PureHealth’s Smart Facilities and Operations approach within its broader sustainability strategy. Building on the Group’s earlier transition of its vehicle fleet to hybrid models, it represents one of three major projects aimed at enhancing energy efficiency across operations, alongside planned solar and retrofit programs.

The system continuously monitors energy usage, similar to how wearable devices track human activity, and uses machine learning to identify opportunities to optimize building systems, such as chillers and other equipment, to maximize energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Facilitated by Rafed, PureHealth’s procurement arm, the smart energy project will be rolled out across Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates under a multi-year contract.

This smart energy project also advances PureHealth’s Net Zero by 2040 ambition, reinforcing the Group’s commitment to creating a smarter, more sustainable healthcare system in line with the UAE’s national priorities for energy efficiency, digital transformation, and climate action.

“This partnership brings smart innovation to the heart of our operations, setting a new benchmark for sustainable healthcare. As we work towards net zero by 2040, we’re focused on turning ambition into measurable impact. By combining AI, IoT and real-time analytics, we’re making our hospitals and clinics more efficient, resilient and environmentally responsible, proving that sustainability and operational excellence go hand in hand.”

John Balassis, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer at EPX, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with PureHealth, the UAE’s largest integrated healthcare group, through this tender led by Rafed, to deliver a targeted energy optimization program across 10 healthcare facilities for SEHA, SEHA Clinics, and TMO. This collaboration for the smart energy project is very exciting and reflects our two organizations’ shared commitment to data-led energy efficiency to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment in the region. We are also pleased to be supporting PureHealth in its foundational steps towards its Net Zero 2040 journey and the UAE’s broader sustainability vision.”

The smart energy project builds on PureHealth’s strong 2024 sustainability performance, including a 37 percent reduction in GHG emissions intensity since 2022, a 9 percent year-on-year decrease, a provisional MSCI AAA rating, a Sustainalytics ‘Low Risk’ climate score, and a spot among Refinitiv/LSEG’s Top 50 Global ESG-rated healthcare companies.
