The Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QGOSM) has adopted new technical controls governing the extension of the permitted sales period for passenger car, bus, and light truck tires in the country.
The measures are being implemented in line with Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) Decision No. 35 of 2026, which updates the Qatari standard specification (QS 581) related to the storage requirements for car tires as a binding technical regulation.
QGOSM stated that extending the tire sales period will not be automatic and will be subject to compliance with approved technical requirements aimed at ensuring product quality and safety in the local market.
Eng. Sultan Hassan Al Kuwari, Head of the Engineering Specification Section at QGOSM, said that the regulation allows for an additional six-month extension for tire sales, provided that agents and retail outlets comply with all technical conditions.
Al Kuwari added that the compliant products will also receive an additional three-month warranty, bringing the total warranty period to one year and three months for approved cases.
Sultan Hassan Al Kuwari noted that applications from companies seeking approval for sales extension will be reviewed by QGOSM to verify compliance with the required technical standards.
Approved companies will be listed and shared with relevant regulatory authorities, along with the tire models eligible for extended sales periods.
The monitoring and inspection campaigns will continue across warehouses, showrooms, and retail outlets in coordination with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, particularly the Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department, to ensure compliance with storage and handling regulations.
These measures are intended to regulate tire trading in the local market, improve product safety and quality, protect consumer rights, and reduce unsafe practices that could impact road safety.
QGOSM confirmed that implementation will be continuously monitored, with quarterly evaluation reports to assess outcomes and introduce corrective actions where required, ensuring compliance with technical standards and maintaining market regulation.
The authority also urged all agents and sales points to comply with the approved requirements and cooperate with regulatory bodies to ensure the highest safety standards in the sector.
