A new multimodal logistics service has been launched in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to enhance the resilience of global supply chains, following the integration of Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), and national shipping carrier Bahri.

The multimodal logistics service facilitates the transportation of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) from Ras Al-Khair to Yanbu Port, bolstering Saudi Arabia’s role as a reliable supplier of essential agricultural materials.

Combining rail, road and sea transport

The multimodal logistics system, which combines rail, road, and sea transport, represents a strategic move to strengthen the Kingdom’s global supply chain capabilities, particularly in the agricultural sector. The operation marks the beginning of a larger effort to optimize logistics in the Kingdom, highlighting the integration between various modes of transportation and key sectors such as mining and agriculture.

The first phase of the multimodal logistics service involves the transportation of over 45,000 tons of DAP, a vital agricultural input used in fertilizer production. Specialized containers carrying the material are initially transported by rail from Ras Al-Khair to the Hail cargo yard.

From there, the cargo is moved by road to Yanbu Commercial Port, where it will be exported globally. This seamless integration of multiple transport modes showcases the high operational capacity of Saudi Arabia’s logistics infrastructure.

Multimodal logistics service advances efficiency, sustainability

The introduction of this rail-integrated logistics system is not only an efficiency booster but also a significant step toward sustainability. By displacing approximately 4,800 truck journeys over the next three months, the service will alleviate traffic congestion, improve road safety, and reduce carbon emissions. This supports Saudi Arabia’s broader sustainability goals and its ambitions to position itself as a leading global logistics hub connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

In addition to improving operational efficiency, the new multimodal logistics service underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to enhancing supply chain resilience in an increasingly interconnected world.

As the Kingdom continues to expand its logistics network, this project will further enhance its capacity to serve as a central player in global trade, particularly in sectors critical to food security.

The collaboration between SAR, Mawani, and Bahri is part of a broader strategy to bolster Saudi Arabia’s logistics infrastructure, improve connectivity, and diversify its economy. With this initiative, the Kingdom is taking significant strides toward achieving its Vision 2030 goals, ensuring long-term economic growth while promoting sustainability and reducing its environmental impact.
