The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has announced the addition of Maersk’s MECL shipping service at Jeddah Islamic Port, enhancing maritime connectivity and expanding the port’s links with regional and global markets.

The new service connects Jeddah Islamic Port with major ports across the United States, Morocco, Oman, and India, supporting the movement of goods and improving access for businesses engaged in global trade.

The Maersk-MECL service links Jeddah Islamic Port with Charleston, Savannah, Houston, Norfolk, and Newark in the United States; Tangier in Morocco; Salalah in Oman; and Mundra, Pipavav, and Nhava Sheva in India. The service has a capacity of up to 7,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

Strengthening maritime connectivity

Mawani said that the addition of the new service forms part of its efforts to enhance the competitiveness of Jeddah Islamic Port, expand its network of shipping routes, and improve the efficiency of maritime transport services.

The expanded connectivity supports smoother trade flows, strengthens supply chain operations, and provides exporters and importers with additional shipping options through one of Saudi Arabia’s key maritime gateways.

Supporting logistics growth

Located on the Red Sea, Jeddah Islamic Port plays an important role in Saudi Arabia’s logistics sector by connecting regional and global trade routes.

The port continues to develop its infrastructure and services as part of the Kingdom’s broader efforts to strengthen its position as a global logistics hub.

The expansion aligns with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which focuses on improving transport networks, increasing logistics efficiency, and enhancing Saudi Arabia’s role in international trade.

The addition of Maersk’s MECL service further contributes to the growth of Jeddah Islamic Port’s shipping network, providing stronger links between Saudi Arabia and major commercial markets across North America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
