Double-Digit Growth, Qatar’s construction sector on the rise

The latest statistics revealed by Qatar’s Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) suggest that Qatar’s construction sector continued to show positive sentiments with double-digit monthly growth for issued building permits in July.

The building permits data is an indicator of the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.

PSA Figures 

Total number of new building permits issued: 684

  • Al Rayyan represented 29 percent of these new building permits with 196 permits
  • Wakrah had issued 150 new building permits (22 percent)
  • Doha issued 116 new building permits (17 percent)
  • Al Daayen was at 106 (16 percent)
  • Umm Slal – 56 (8 percent)
  • Al Khor – 31 (5 percent)
  • Al Shahaniya – 17 (2 percent) and
  • Al Shamal – 12 (2%)

On a monthly basis, at the national level, the number of building permits issued increased 20 percent with Umm Slal reporting 87 percent growth, Al Khor (41 percent), Wakrah and Doha (20 percent each), Al Rayyan (17 percent) and Al Daayen (6 percent); while Al Shamal and Al Shahaniya witnessed 8 percent and 6 percent declines respectively.

Permit breakups – July 2020

  • New building permits (residential and non-residential) represented 49 percent (336 permits)
  • Additions – 320 permits (47 percent), and
  • Fencing – 28 permits (4 percent)

Of the new residential buildings permits, villas topped the list, accounting for 68 percent (175 permits) of the total, dwellings of housing loans 21 percent (54 permits) and apartments 7 percent (28 permits).

Among the non-residential sector, commercial structures accounted for 46 percent or 36 permits, the industrial buildings as workshops and factories 28 percent (22 permits) and government buildings 12 percent (nine permits).

The country witnessed a total of 354 building completion certificates issued this July, of which 265 or 75 percent was for the new buildings (residential and non-residential) and 89 or 25 percent for additions.

Al Rayyan municipality topped the municipalities with 100 certificates or 28 percent of the total, Wakrah 84 (24 percent), Doha 60 (17 percent), Al Daayen 59 (17 percent), Umm Slal 18 (5 percent), Al Shahaniya 17 (5 percent), Al Khor 11 (3 percent) and Al Shamal five (1 percent).

The overall building completion certificates issued saw a 16 percent jump month-on-month in July 2020 with Al Shamal growing 89 percent, Al Khor (38 percent), Doha (15 percent), Al Rayyan (11 percent), Wakrah (8 percent), Umm Slal (6 percent) and Al Daayen (2 percent); even as Al Shamal declined 38 percent.
