The Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), has completed a solar energy system installation at the Khalifa City water distribution station, making it fully powered by renewable energy with the capacity to export surplus electricity to the national grid.
During an inspection visit to the station, Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, EWA’s President, highlighted that the project is part of a comprehensive plan to install solar energy systems across various facilities. Kamal noted that Khalifa City station is the eleventh EWA facility to be equipped with solar energy systems, reflecting the authority’s commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.
This comes in line with EWA’s ongoing expansion in sustainable energy solutions to support clean energy production, promote renewable energy use, and contribute to Bahrain’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives aim to enhance reliance on clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and build a more sustainable future for the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The solar project also highlights Bahrain’s SDGs to diversify energy sources, improve efficiency, encourage investment in renewable energy, and increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix, in line with international commitments and Bahrain Economic Vision 2030.
The project includes the installation of 2,032 solar panels on the station’s underground reservoir rooftops, with a maximum production capacity of 1,400 kilowatts of clean electricity, ensuring full operation on renewable energy. The system is equipped with a self-cleaning mechanism for the solar panels and is integrated with monitoring and control devices.
This project marks a significant step towards environmental and economic sustainability in Bahrain, reinforcing EWA’s commitment to adopting global best practices in renewable energy and strengthening the Kingdom’s position as a regional leader in clean energy.
