Fastest Mobile Internet in the World; Qatar takes the crown for December 2020

Mobile Internet speed in Qatar has been deemed as the fastest in the world in December 2020 by the Speedtest Global Index results revealed by the global leader in internet testing and analysis Ookla. 

Qatar’s average download speed was clocked at 178.01 Megabits per second (Mbps) last month while the average upload speed was recorded at 29.74 Mbps. The average download speed in the country was 77.07 Mbps in November 2020 while the upload speed was 21.49 Mbps. The nation which has one of the highest internet penetrations in the world improved its performance by two places when compared to the previous month.

In its report briefing about the feat, Ookla remarked that “On mobile, Qatar climbed two spots to land in first place for mobile. While the country has ranked among the top five for the past year, this is the first time the country has reached the top spot.”

Global averages

The average download speed across the globe was recorded at 47.20 Mbps while the upload speed was 12.67 Mbps.

The United Arab Emirates stood second in the global ranking with an average download speed of 177.52 Mbps while South Korea was placed third with an average download speed of 169.03 Mbps in December.

The Republic of China came fourth in the index with an average download speed of 155.89 Mbps, followed by Australia at 112.68 Mbps.

Qatar’s technical superiority 

The State of Qatar has received several accolades doe its excellence in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in 2020. The country was recently was ranked second in the Arab world and ninth globally in ICT adoption as per the Global Competitiveness Report Special Edition 2020 report by the World Economic Forum.

Qatar has recently made significant investments in the 5G technology which allows peak Internet connection speed to reach 1 Gbps. The roll-out of 5G has also hastened the development of a wider communications infrastructure in Qatar. Adoption of new technology in Qatar is also high as the use of the Internet and new devices have increased significantly over the last 10 years.
