Abu Dhabi Mobility, an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), has launched a central control room to oversee and monitor autonomous vehicle (AV) operations across the emirate under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council.
The central control room is designed to strengthen oversight and regulation of the autonomous mobility sector through advanced real-time monitoring, data analysis and decision-support systems, ensuring high standards of safety and operational efficiency.
The facility was inaugurated in the presence of Sheikh Hamdan bin Saeed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan and HE Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT. The launch of central control room comes as Abu Dhabi continues to expand autonomous vehicle services across the emirate, reinforcing the need for regulatory mechanisms that keep pace with the sector’s rapid growth.
According to Abu Dhabi Mobility, the central control room enables real-time monitoring of autonomous vehicle movements and rapid response to operational or emergency situations in line with approved procedures and regulatory requirements, enhancing road safety.
The central control room is equipped with advanced monitoring and operational systems, including a centralized supervision system and an integrated platform for the operation and testing of autonomous vehicles (AViTOMS).
The platform enables real-time tracking of vehicle locations, speeds and routes, comprehensive trip recording and analysis, coordinated emergency response with relevant authorities, and the generation of data-driven reports to improve route planning and operational efficiency. It also manages permit issuance and operational route approvals.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli Acting Director General – Integrated Transport Centre – Abu Dhabi
“The inauguration of the central control room represents a key milestone in the development of the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi. It responds to the rapid adoption of smart mobility technologies, which require an advanced supervisory system to ensure real-time monitoring and efficient risk management. Through this control room, we establish an integrated approach combining technical capabilities and regulatory frameworks, enhancing the emirate’s readiness to operate autonomous vehicles within a safe and organized environment that builds trust and road safety.”
HE Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector, said that, “The center’s initiatives reflect a significant shift toward an integrated digital services model that strengthens Abu Dhabi’s leadership in the smart transportation sector.”
The central control room covers all autonomous vehicle services operated by licensed providers across Abu Dhabi, strengthening regulatory oversight, supporting the sector’s continued expansion and promoting the adoption of smart mobility solutions with the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
