The UAE and Saudi Arabia have intensified efforts to strengthen bilateral trade connectivity through a new multimodal logistics corridor aimed at ensuring faster and more resilient cargo movement.
The initiative, led by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) in collaboration with UAE-based logistics operator Gulftainer, will establish direct cargo connectivity between Sharjah and Dammam.
The project integrates sea and land transport networks to streamline cargo flows, reduce transit times, and enhance supply chain efficiency between the two markets.
At the core of the corridor is the Khorfakkan Commercial Terminal, strategically located on the UAE’s eastern seaboard outside the Strait of Hormuz.
This positioning allows vessels to bypass one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, which has come under heightened risk due to geopolitical tensions.
The corridor will also link inland logistics infrastructure such as the Sajaa Dry Port, creating a seamless land-sea freight network extending into Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, anchored by Dammam.
The corridor’s launch comes against the backdrop of ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery through which a significant portion of global oil and trade shipments pass.
Recent hostilities involving Iran have disrupted shipping patterns, with Tehran reportedly targeting vessels transiting the waterway. Further escalation risks loom after Iranian officials signaled the potential deployment of naval mines in the Gulf if military action intensifies.
The Sharjah–Dammam corridor is widely viewed as a critical step toward diversifying regional trade routes. By leveraging integrated inland corridors and alternative maritime access points, the initiative is expected to enhance supply chain resilience, mitigate geopolitical risks, and improve market access for businesses in both countries.
For the Gulf’s trade-dependent economies, the project underscores a broader strategic shift, prioritizing redundancy, flexibility, and infrastructure integration to safeguard economic continuity in an increasingly volatile regional landscape.
