OpenAI and Anthropic are raising usage limits for select users of their AI coding agents, Codex and Claude, as part of a special holiday season promotion.
The temporary increase aims to provide enhanced access and support for users during the festive period.
OpenAI has reset and doubled the usage limits for Codex users, extending the offer until January 1, 2026. Meanwhile, Anthropic has introduced a holiday usage promotion, granting Pro and Max subscribers double their usual usage limits on Claude’s platforms, including mobile, desktop, and web, from December 25 to 31.
The OpenAI offer was announced in a post on X by the company’s Member of Technical Staff, Thibault Sottiaux, who said that, “For Codex users, to thank you all for the fun we’ve had over the last months, our first gift is that we have reset rate limits and are lifting the usage limits to 2X the usual limits until the 1st of Jan.”
Codex is OpenAI’s specialized AI agent for coding tasks, which can handle end-to-end development based on a text prompt or images that showcase the basic idea behind the software. It can be used locally as a command-line interface (CLI), within ChatGPT, and as an integrated development environment via platforms such as Visual Studio (VS) Code and Cursor.
Anthropic’s holiday usage increase is available exclusively to individual subscribers, with Team and Enterprise plans excluded from the offer. Both existing Pro and Max subscribers, as well as new users who sign up during the promotional period, are eligible for the doubled usage limits. After December 31, the usage limits will return to their standard levels for each subscription.
According to the reports, the promotions come as AI platforms increasingly adjust metering and usage caps that dictate how much service each paid tier can access within specific periods, often defined by rolling windows and weekly limits. Both announcements are targeted at developers, professionals, and heavy users who frequently reach their usage limits during periods of high demand.
