Qatar and Uzbekistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance joint cooperation in parliamentary affairs, exchange legislative information and expertise, and organize reciprocal visits.

As part of both nations’ commitment to enhancing parliamentary relations, an official round of talks was held in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, between the Shura Council of Qatar and the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The Qatari side was led by HE Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, while the Uzbek side was led by HE Chairperson of the Senate Tanzila Norbaeva.

The discussions explored ways to strengthen parliamentary cooperation, coordinate positions in regional and international parliamentary forums, exchange expertise, and support channels of parliamentary dialogue between the two sides.

HE Al Ghanim also met with HE Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nuriddinjon Ismailov. The meeting highlighted the parliamentary cooperation between the Shura Council and the Legislative Chamber, focusing on ways to support and enhance it. In addition, some topics of joint concern were discussed.

The talks also covered key items on the agenda of the 150th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly, which is scheduled to host in Tashkent from April 5 to 9.

The session’s agenda includes an array of issues revolving around current global challenges, such as the Gaza crisis, the matters of international peace and security, environmental governance mechanisms to address climate change, and the activation of legislative frameworks to drive social and economic justice.

Furthermore, the participants will discuss parliamentary initiatives to drive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at both regional and international levels, and will discuss the progress made in achieving these goals.
