Abu Dhabi Customs has developed a new integrated sustainability framework that aligns the organisation’s corporate strategy, strategic plans and operational activities with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and institutional excellence.

The framework is designed to translate the SDGs into actionable initiatives and measurable performance indicators aimed at strengthening institutional performance, embedding sustainability across customs operations, and creating long-term economic, social and environmental impact.

The initiative forms part of Abu Dhabi Customs’ strategy to strengthen its position as a world-class customs authority while advancing sustainable and innovative customs practices.

The framework is structured around five key pillars: People, Planet, Peace, Prosperity and Partnership, with each pillar linked to defined objectives and practical initiatives tailored to customs operations.

The framework was developed through the ‘Development of the Sustainability and Green Customs Framework’ project, which established a comprehensive institutional model that includes governance mechanisms, an implementation roadmap, performance measurement systems and sustainability reporting processes.

According to Abu Dhabi Customs, the project adopted a structured, evidence-based methodology that included evaluating current institutional practices and benchmarking performance against leading customs administrations globally. The assessment helped identify opportunities for development and strengthen alignment with international best practices.

As part of its sustainability efforts, Abu Dhabi Customs also issued its Sustainability Report in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, underscoring its commitment to governance, transparency and internationally recognized sustainability standards.

The new direction is expected to strengthen Abu Dhabi Customs’ role in facilitating secure and legitimate trade, advancing green customs initiatives and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. It also contributes to Abu Dhabi’s broader vision of building a sustainable, innovation-driven and future-ready development model.
