The Roads General Authority (RGA) and the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth) have launched the ‘Wrth Saudi’ initiative, which features informational signs along highways throughout the Kingdom.

This initiative aims to introduce and celebrate authentic Saudi crafts, blending traditional artistry with a modern cultural and visual context.

RGA in Saudi Arabia is the government entity responsible for overseeing the planning, development, maintenance, and regulation of the country’s road infrastructure. This authority plays a critical role in the construction and maintenance of highways, roads, bridges, and tunnels, ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation networks throughout Saudi Arabia.

Under the Vision 2030 initiative, the Roads General Authority has been involved in large-scale road and transportation projects to modernize infrastructure, promote economic diversification, and improve the country’s global competitiveness.

Launched in conjunction with ‘The Year of Handicrafts,’ the initiative’s first phase began on three major highways: the Riyadh–Dammam Road, the Hijra Road (Makkah–Madinah), and the Riyadh–Qassim Road. Subsequent phases will expand the initiative to other vital roads across the country.

‘Wrth Saudi’ highlights the traditional arts unique to each region before travelers arrive, showcasing crafts such as Najdi door-making, clay construction, carpentry and wood decoration, and the bisht, a traditional Arabic cloak.

The Kingdom’s expansive and highly interconnected road network, one of the most comprehensive in the world, is widely used by pilgrims and tourists. The initiative provides a valuable opportunity to promote Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.

According to the press release, the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts is at the forefront of preserving Saudi Arabia’s national identity by promoting and enriching traditional arts both within the country and on the global stage. It supports artisans, honors cultural pioneers, and fosters both learning and innovation in the realm of traditional arts.
