The Fashion Commission, in partnership with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), has launched the Intellectual Property and Designers’ Rights Protection Guide to support the fashion industry in safeguarding creative works.
The initiative is part of the Fashion Commission’s ongoing efforts to empower the local fashion sector, strengthen the designer community, and foster a regulatory and developmental framework that addresses all phases of the product value chain.
The guide is designed to help fashion designers understand and leverage intellectual property (IP) laws to protect and register their creative outputs. By offering legal protection, it aims to encourage innovation while deterring imitation and intellectual theft.
It further aims to serve as a reference for designers to benefit from intellectual-property laws by protecting and registering their innovative designs, thereby enabling them to obtain legal protection.
The Fashion Commission offers a protection guide to cover four key areas within the fashion industry:
- Patents, which include new inventions and technological advancements in fabric and garment production
- Industrial designs, which pertain to aesthetic elements and decorative patterns that give fashion items their unique appearance
- Copyright, which covers artistic and creative outputs such as illustrations, patterns, and designs; and
- Trademarks, which include logos and symbols that distinguish a product in the marketplace.
By promoting awareness and accessibility to these protections, the guide aims to cultivate a culture of originality and support the sustainable growth of the Saudi fashion ecosystem.
The Fashion Commission noted that designers and brand owners can download the guide from the Fashion Commission’s official website. In addition, SAIP continues to accept complaints from rights holders or their representatives through its website regarding violations of works protected violations under the Copyright Protection Law and the Trademarks Law.
