The Saudi National Livestock and Fisheries ‬Development Program has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with global biotechnology solutions provider PhageGuard and Saudi-based poultry producer Tanmiah Food Company.

The memorandum, signed in the presence of the Vice Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Eng. Mansour Al Mushaiti, aims to localize the PhaseGuard technology.

The partnership aligns with the Kingdom’s efforts to promote sustainable livestock production and improve the quality and safety of local products by adopting innovative solutions that reduce health and environmental risks and enhance the competitiveness of national products regionally and globally.

Under the MoU, PhageGuard will provide its advanced biotechnology solutions through its local agent, Portalis Capital, to Tanmiah Food Company, which will be responsible for implementing and localizing these technologies in the Saudi market. The step aims to support the development of the poultry sector, boost its operational and production efficiency, and establish a knowledge- and innovation-driven livestock industry.

The partnership centers on the use of bacteriophage technology as a promising biological alternative to traditional antibiotics, particularly considering growing concerns over antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The phages specifically target Salmonella bacteria, helping reduce its spread, lower dependence on antibiotics, and transition toward safer food production.

The application of this technology will help mitigate the risk of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella in animal products such as poultry and eggs, thereby enhancing the quality and safety of the final product and strengthening its competitiveness in both local and global markets.
