The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has announced the launch of a new global research center, with support from the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The new research center will become a leading entity and a high-level reference body for research aimed at accelerating the transformation of the tourism sector on its journey to climate neutrality.

The center aims to provide best practices that cater to the needs of the entire travel and tourism sector, which includes major multinational companies with specific goals and extensive experiences, as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises, which make up 80 percent of the sector.

According to the statement, “The center will focus on various areas of work such as exploring renewable energy alternatives, efficient resource management, and reducing emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3. It will also aim to find ways to minimize food and resource waste, including water, while simultaneously protecting nature and supporting local communities.”

Saudi Minister of Tourism Mr. Ahmed bin Aqeel Al-Khateeb emphasized that this initiative builds upon the decision to establish the Global Center for Sustainable Tourism in Saudi Arabia, which was announced by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince during the Saudi Green Initiative in October 2021.

Mr. Al-Khateeb highlighted the center’s commitment to providing global solutions that empower small and medium enterprises, travel destinations, and travelers, equipping them with valuable resources to make informed decisions.

“Our goal is that the center will be a leading global center that provides indispensable tools and solutions to all stakeholders, with the support of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and the Ministry of Tourism. Through these efforts, we aim to empower and support the travel and tourism sector to adopt environmental solutions and support prosperity,” the Saudi Minister further added.
