The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has launched a National AI Risk Management Framework, introducing a unified methodology to identify, assess, treat, and monitor AI-related risks across Saudi Arabia. The initiative aims to help public and private sector organizations adopt artificial intelligence safely, responsibly, and in line with best practices.
The National AI Risk Management Framework provides a standardized approach to AI risk management, offering organizations guidance to address the unique challenges of artificial intelligence systems while supporting innovation and digital transformation across the Kingdom.
SDAIA said AI risks differ from those linked to traditional software systems. Unlike conventional software risks, AI risks may emerge unexpectedly, evolve over time, and be difficult to explain, predict, or reproduce. These characteristics require an integrated approach to ensure AI systems remain reliable, transparent, and trustworthy throughout their lifecycle.
Structured risk management methodology
The National AI Risk Management Framework follows a structured risk management methodology built around four interconnected phases: defining context and scope, identifying and assessing risks, treating risks, and continuous monitoring and review. Together, these stages provide organizations with a systematic approach to managing AI risks from development through deployment and operation.
AI risk levels are calculated using a matrix that combines the likelihood of occurrence with the scale of potential impact. This enables organizations to prioritize risks, apply mitigation measures, and support informed decision-making throughout the AI lifecycle.
Major principles behind National AI Risk Management Framework
The National AI Risk Management Framework is based on seven core principles guiding responsible AI development and deployment, including integrity, privacy, transparency, and accountability. It also classifies AI risks into seven main categories to ensure broad coverage of potential challenges across different AI applications.
The launch of National AI Risk Management Framework reinforces SDAIA’s role as Saudi Arabia’s national reference for data and artificial intelligence. It also supports the Kingdom’s efforts to build a governance framework that promotes responsible AI use while advancing innovation, digital transformation, and economic growth.
The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to position the Kingdom as a global leader in data and artificial intelligence by promoting trusted, secure, and responsible AI adoption across government, business, and society.
