Tired of explaining how your name is pronounced? This is a woe familiar to a large chunk of the world population. Sometimes, nothing can be more irksome than being addressed with the wrong pronunciation or more embarrassing than addressing someone with the wrong name.

LinkedIn, the global platform for professional relationships is here to rescue us out of this weird situation by introducing a new feature to the profile of its users – the option to record 10-second audio clips to let others know how to pronounce your name.

LinkedIn has clarified that currently the audio can be recorded and uploaded only from the mobile app while it can be played on both the website and app version.

How to record an audio clip on LinkedIn profile:

  1. Open the mobile app from LinkedIn and tap View Profile.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. You will see a new choice called Record Name Pronunciation which you must click on.
  4. The phone will start recording so you need to make sure your clip is within the limit of 10 seconds.
  5. You can then upload it onto your profile if you are satisfied with the recording.

Note that the total recording time should be no more than 10 seconds. So don’t take much time to pronounce your own name. When you start recording make sure there is no background noise because it will make listening to your recording difficult for people. Speak very simply and quietly when you are at it, and simply pronounce each syllable.

The feature is a simple one (Facebook has offered a similar option with digital pronunciations for years) but on a networking site such as LinkedIn, it is extremely welcome. If you are talking to colleagues for the first time, it is intended to eliminate uncomfortable or unprofessional errors: something much more important as the pandemic has meant that face-to-face interactions are minimal.
