UAE MoIAT’s Steering Committee plans new projects to back industrial sector

The Steering Committee for Standardisation and Metrology, part of the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), has held its first meeting chaired by Mr. Omar Suwaina Al Suwaidi, Under-Secretary of MoIAT and Chairman of the committee.

During the first meeting, the officials discussed new initiatives to support the growth of the UAE’s industrial sector. The agenda included modernizing the ecosystem of technical committees and teams and their work mechanisms.

The committee evaluated plans and initiatives under MoIAT’s standards and legislation sector to engage the industrial sector in developing standards, laws and technical regulations in the UAE.

It also discussed MoIAT’s plan to restructure national technical committees for standards, which will help improve the quality of national industrial products while meeting health, safety and environmental requirements.

During the meeting, Major General Dr. Ahmed Naser Al Raisi, Inspector-General at the Ministry of Interior, was chosen as the committee’s Vice-Chairman.

Mr. Al Suwaidi emphasized that MoIAT’s ability to coordinate and integrate its partners, including federal and local government agencies, directly affects the development of policies, laws and programs that boost the growth of national industries and enhance their competitiveness.

The ministry’s approach creates a conducive and attractive business environment for local and global industrial investors while stimulating innovation and the adoption of advanced technology in industrial systems and solutions and this, in turn, enhances the competitiveness of UAE products in local and foreign markets.

The meeting also revised the resolution that formed the committee and set its terms of reference, which included supervising and following up on technical committees and teams, evaluating and approving plans and programs in line with defined procedures, and recommending the adoption of draft standard specifications, technical legislation and mandatory regulations developed by technical committees and teams.

MoIAT’s Steering Committee for Standardisation and Metrology was established by Cabinet Resolution 17/7 for 2021. It is responsible for supervising the development of the legislative ecosystem for standard specifications and their mandatory regulations, thus realizing the government’s strategy through promoting a sustainable environment, developing integrated infrastructure, and assessing draft standards and technical legislation.
