University of Sharjah has inaugurated an international conference focused on safeguarding intellectual security in the age of social media, addressing one of the most pressing challenges in today’s digital landscape.

Organised by the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies through its Forum for Intellectual Security in Islam, the conference brought together academics, researchers, and specialists from across the UAE and beyond.

Titled ‘Safeguarding Intellectual Security in Social Media from the Perspective of Islamic Sciences and the Humanities‘, the event aims to develop evidence-based approaches to addressing intellectual challenges through integrated disciplines, including Islamic jurisprudence, law, education, and media studies.

Issam Al-Din Ibrahim Ajami, Chancellor of University of Sharjah, praised the UAE’s role in regulating the digital space and promoting responsible online discourse, highlighting the importance of the conference amid a rapidly evolving information environment.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Ajami stressed that, guided by the vision of Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University, the conference reflects University of Sharjah’ commitment to addressing critical societal issues. He emphasised the importance of promoting moderation and balance in line with Islamic values and strengthening responsible digital engagement.

Prof. Ajami noted that confronting extremist ideas begins with protecting the minds of young people, asserting that safeguarding intellectual security on social media is increasingly vital due to its impact on youth and societal stability, and stressing that these challenges must be addressed through awareness, scientific rigor, and structured methodologies.

He further noted that the conference examines challenges linked to social media content while exploring ways to enhance professional and ethical standards in digital discourse. He also commended the UAE’s legislative efforts to regulate digital platforms and preserve societal values.

Kotb Rissouni highlighted the importance of verifying information, countering misinformation and extremist narratives, and promoting moderation. He said University of Sharjah continues to build a knowledge framework that strengthens intellectual resilience and supports sustainable development.

Abdulrahman Abdul Latif said intellectual security is now a ‘civilizational necessity‘ comparable to physical security. While social media enables knowledge sharing, he warned it can also spread doubt and deviation without proper awareness and safeguards, calling for coordinated institutional efforts.

The conference will conclude with recommendations focused on enhancing cooperation between educational, media, and religious institutions, and advancing scientifically grounded strategies to protect intellectual security in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
