The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (Abu Dhabi DoE) has launched the second phase of its Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy, expanding its scope to include the residential sector for the first time in Abu Dhabi.

The Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy extends to villa owners and residential buildings, enabling them to generate, store, and integrate rooftop solar energy with the grid more efficiently.

This initiative supports DoE’s mandate to accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy system by promoting smart, flexible solutions for energy production and consumption. The Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy builds on the success of the first phase, launched at the World Government Summit in February, which allowed farms, rest houses, and ranches to adopt solar energy for self-generation and storage, improving efficiency.

The expansion reflects increasing adoption of renewable energy and aligns with national goals to meet rising energy demand through advanced, sector-wide solutions. It introduces a simplified regulatory framework that streamlines installation and grid connection, while standardizing technical requirements to ensure safety and efficiency.

In parallel, Abu Dhabi DoE has introduced a policy on procuring energy-efficient appliances, guiding individuals and organizations to choose solutions based on performance data and lifecycle cost. It covers key systems such as air conditioning, water heating, lighting, electrical appliances, pumps, motors, and irrigation, while promoting best practices, smart controls, and regular maintenance to reduce energy and water use, lower peak demand, and enhance overall efficiency.

The second phase of Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy also enables customers to meet a substantial portion of daytime energy needs through solar power and store excess energy in batteries, reducing grid pressure and improving load management across the emirate.

“The second phase of the Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy represents a significant step in advancing the policy’s implementation, integrating the residential sector to enhance energy consumption efficiency and support the integration of the power system. We are strengthening partnerships in the transition towards clean energy, contributing to a more balanced and sustainable energy mix by empowering a broader segment of society.”

The Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy underscores Abu Dhabi DoE’s commitment to accelerating advanced energy adoption, improving system efficiency, and supporting the emirate’s Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030 targets. It reflects an integrated approach that combines regulation, technology, and behavioral measures to enhance efficiency at both consumer and system levels.
