Bahrain EWA, GE Digital strikes $28.7mn worth deal to install grid solution

The Bahrain Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) has signed a $28.7 million worth deal with GE Digital, an American Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) service provider, to deploy multiple solutions including software and services to modernize and control electricity and water networks in the Kingdom.

A variety of GE Digital’s industry-leading Grid Software will be installed in a state-of-the-art control center that will digitize operations to improve efficiency and operations redundancy.

The unique end-to-end software system covers the entire spectrum of operations for the company’s essential electricity and water services, from transmission to distribution. Its implementation will be vital to the country’s long-term economic vision and strategy.

This project will facilitate our goals to optimize asset and network utilization and minimize outages in the networks for the reliability of supply.” 

The grid Software of GE Digital to be utilized by EWA include Advanced Distribution Management Solutions (ADMS) that provide for the safe and secure management of the electric grid, the Advanced Energy Management System (AEMS) which optimizes the energy and electric transmission more innovatively with improved efficiency by integrating multiple monitoring, control, and analytics systems into a modular solution. 

The additional solutions provided are the AEMS Wide Area Management (WAMS) that monitors and locate system oscillations in real-time reducing the risk of unnecessary power disruptions and accelerate system restoration in case of an outage and the Water Transmission and Water Distribution Management.

Commenting on the deal Mr. Talal Eskandar, Vice President for GE Digital’s commercial operations in the Middle East (ME) region said that as the authority serves 430,000 electricity and 310,000 water customers, GE digital’s solutions will assist in optimizing their customer service and asset management goals.
