Etihad Airways has introduced an international summer deployment program for its highest-performing Emirati airport trainees, providing selected participants with overseas operational experience as part of the airline’s Emiratisation strategy.
The program is being introduced for the first time following the foundation phase of Etihad’s Airports and Ground Operations Programs.
It is designed to give UAE Nationals practical experience at international stations across the airline’s network before they progress into operational leadership roles.
The Airports and Ground Operations Programs begin with a foundation phase at Zayed International Airport, where trainees receive a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on operational training.
During the program, trainees rotate through key airport functions, including check-in, boarding, transfer services, baggage operations, and arrivals. They also gain exposure to network operations and aircraft dispatch before advancing to airport supervisory positions.
Following the completion of the foundation phase, the first cohort of seven Emirati trainees has been assigned to Etihad’s international stations in Copenhagen, Paris, Phuket, and Kuala Lumpur. The destinations were selected due to higher passenger volumes during the peak summer travel season.
At these locations, the trainees will work alongside Etihad’s airport teams and apply the operational knowledge gained in Abu Dhabi in day-to-day airport operations.
Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Chief People, Government, and Corporate Affairs Officer at Etihad Airways, said that, “Since launching our Emiratisation strategy last year, we have invested in programs that combine world-class operational training with meaningful international exposure, giving flight to the ambitions of our Emirati talent and equipping them with the skills, confidence, and global perspective to thrive.”
“Our Airport Programs are preparing the next generation of Emirati professionals who will play a vital role in delivering safe, efficient, and world-class airport operations. Through hands-on experience across our global network, they gain practical insights, exchange knowledge with international colleagues, and experience diverse operational and cultural environments.”
The Airports and Ground Operations Programs form part of Etihad’s wider Emiratization strategy, which aims to create long-term career opportunities for UAE Nationals while supporting the airline’s operational expansion.
According to Etihad, Emirati employees who have progressed through these programs currently oversee airport operations across East Asia, Europe, the GCC, and North Africa.
The introduction of the international summer deployment program expands these career pathways by providing international operational experience at an earlier stage of training.
