Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) and Qatar Airways have launched the ‘Fast Pass’ biometric service to streamline passenger processing and reduce paper-based travel procedures.

The service has been introduced in collaboration with technology company SITA. According to Hamad International Airport, the new service uses facial recognition technology to enable passengers to move through key airport checkpoints with minimal document verification.

The airport stated that the rollout is one of the largest implementations of biometric passenger identity verification in the Middle East and globally.

The system connects more than 700 touchpoints into a single biometric journey while maintaining security and data protection standards throughout the journey.

Passengers can register for the Fast Pass service through self-service check-in kiosks at Hamad International Airport or via the Qatar Airways mobile application.

Once registered, passengers can use facial recognition at designated biometric-enabled checkpoints, including check-in, baggage drop, security screening, and boarding gates.

The airport highlighted that the registration and activation process takes only a few seconds, reducing repeated document checks and helping shorten waiting times, particularly during peak travel periods.

Hamad International Airport added that the service is optional, and passengers who do not wish to use biometric verification can continue to complete travel procedures using passports and boarding passes with assistance from airport staff.

The airport noted that demand for biometric travel is increasing worldwide, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reporting that most passengers prefer biometric identity verification over paper-based document checks.

The launch of Fast Pass forms part of its efforts to expand the use of digital technologies and align with global developments in passenger processing while providing a more efficient airport experience.

The expansion of the Fast Pass service also supports HIA’s paperless travel initiative. It plans to add more biometric-enabled touchpoints and continue working with technology partners to enhance passenger processing, with the service expected to be made available to additional airlines operating at Hamad International Airport in the future.
