Saudi Arabia has advanced efforts to restore degraded ecosystems, combat desertification and promote the sustainable management of natural resources through a growing partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as the Kingdom accelerates environmental initiatives under Saudi Vision 2030.
Marking World Environment Day, FAO in Saudi Arabia has spotlighted its collaboration with national partners to support environmental protection, ecosystem rehabilitation and sustainable development goals aimed at strengthening environmental resilience and long-term resource sustainability.
The partnership focuses on addressing key environmental challenges, including land degradation, desertification and declining vegetation cover, while supporting initiatives designed to improve ecosystem health, safeguard biodiversity and enhance the sustainable use of natural resources.
Saudi Arabia has intensified efforts in recent years to rehabilitate degraded land and expand green spaces through a series of large-scale environmental programs and restoration projects. These initiatives form part of broader national efforts to improve environmental sustainability, strengthen climate resilience and support economic diversification objectives outlined in Vision 2030.
FAO said ecosystem restoration plays a critical role in protecting natural resources, improving agricultural productivity and strengthening food and water security, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions facing increasing environmental pressures.
Dr. Nizar Haddad, FAO Program Director in Saudi Arabia, pointed out that the land restoration represents not only an environmental necessity but also a strategic investment in food security, water security and sustainable livelihoods. He noted that Saudi Arabia’s experience demonstrates how an ambitious national vision, combined with science, innovation and effective partnerships, can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.
The FAO emphasized that continued collaboration between international organizations and national stakeholders will remain essential to advancing ecosystem restoration efforts and achieving long-term sustainability goals.
The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader environmental agenda under Vision 2030 and supports global efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action, sustainable land management and environmental conservation.
