Saudi Arabia and Russia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in environmental protection and sustainability, expanding collaboration on a range of environmental issues of mutual interest.
The agreement was signed by Mansour Al Mushaiti, Saudi Vice Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, and Alexander Kozlov, Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, during an official visit to Russia.
The MoU enhances bilateral cooperation in preserving natural resources and advancing environmental sustainability in line with the laws and regulations of both countries.
It also reflects the shared commitment of Saudi Arabia and Russia to address environmental challenges through coordinated action, knowledge exchange, and technical collaboration.
Under the agreement, the two countries will cooperate in several key areas, including the development of vegetation cover, mitigation of land degradation, sustainable forest management, and the enhancement of management systems for protected and natural areas.
The partnership will also focus on strengthening environmental monitoring and waste management practices while supporting scientific research initiatives aimed at protecting and rehabilitating rare and endangered species.
In addition, the agreement includes cooperation in combating the illegal trade of endangered flora and fauna and protecting migratory bird routes and key stopover habitats.
The countries will work together to promote biodiversity conservation and safeguard ecosystems through the exchange of expertise and best practices.
The MoU further provides a framework for sharing technical knowledge and successful environmental initiatives that can support sustainable resource management and conservation efforts in both countries.
Implementation of the agreement will be facilitated through the exchange of information, reciprocal visits by experts and specialists, and the organization of joint conferences, seminars, workshops, and training programs focused on environmental protection and sustainability.
To oversee the cooperation and identify future opportunities, Saudi Arabia and Russia will establish a joint working group responsible for coordinating activities and monitoring progress under the agreement.
The partnership is expected to contribute to broader environmental objectives in both countries while supporting international efforts to protect biodiversity, strengthen ecosystem resilience, and promote sustainable development.
