In a landmark achievement, the Saudi Space Agency has confirmed the successful return of scientific experiments conducted as part of the ‘Madak Space’ competition from the International Space Station (ISS) to Earth.
The experiments, carried out in microgravity, were created by ten student winners from Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations and were returned following the conclusion of the AX-4 mission.
Organized in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk) and the ‘Ilmi’ Center for Science Discovery and Innovation, the initiative aimed to empower Arab youth by allowing them to contribute to real-time space experiments. The competition emphasized the integration of arts, engineering, and plant sciences to inspire scientific thinking and innovation among students.
The ‘Madak Space’ program featured ten unique projects representing a blend of scientific inquiry and artistic exploration. Students from Saudi Arabia and across the Arab region submitted their ideas, which were then evaluated by a panel of experts based on quality, feasibility in a space environment, and potential to spark innovation. The rigorous selection process ensured only the most impactful and viable experiments were chosen for the mission.
The experiments were conducted aboard the ISS by veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, with direct supervision from Saudi astronaut Rayyanah Barnawi. The Saudi Space Agency’s technical team also provided scientific oversight throughout the mission. As the first initiative of its kind in the Arab world, ‘Madak Space’ created a platform for students to actively participate in the space sector.
The initiative enabled the submission of projects across three tracks: arts, plants, and engineering. The program not only offered hands-on experience but also played a strategic role in building national and regional capabilities in science and technology.
This achievement by the Madak Space underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing role in the global space sector and its commitment to cultivating future generations of Arab scientists, artists, and engineers with a passion for exploration and innovation.
