The National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) has signed a contract with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) to implement energy-saving initiatives and improve energy efficiency at SAR’s headquarters building, as well as its facilities at the Riyadh North Station.

This agreement is the first of its kind within the Kingdom’s private, logistics, and transportation sectors. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative by implementing sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions.

The contract details a comprehensive retrofit project with estimated annual energy savings of approximately 7 GWh, totaling 105 GWh over the project’s lifespan. The project will involve installing a chiller control system and variable speed drives for chilled water pumps, implementing a control system for air handling units and exhaust fans integrated with the central cooling plant’s operations, and installing solar panels on rooftops across the project’s buildings and facilities.

It will also include upgrading to high-performance LED lighting systems and adding occupancy sensors and motion detectors throughout SAR’s headquarters and Riyadh North Station.

The Board Member and CEO of Tarshid Waled Al-Ghreri stated that, “At Tarshid, we are committed to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by increasing energy efficiency and promoting sustainability through strategic partnerships with both public and private sectors. Our collaboration with SAR aims to deliver measurable energy efficiency improvements and enhance operational performance. We look forward to establishing SAR as a benchmark for energy efficiency within the logistics and transportation sector.”

The project is set to improve air conditioning and lighting performance while significantly reducing environmental impacts. It is expected to save over 168,000 barrels of oil and avoid approximately 60,000 metric tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to planting more than one million seedlings over the project’s duration, as per the reports.
