UnionPay International (UPI), a subsidiary of China-based UnionPay has partnered with one of the largest banks in the UAE, the Islamic Bank of Abu Dhabi (ADIB) to allow UnionPay card and contactless payment transactions on the bank’s 15,000 near field communications (NFC) terminals in the UAE.

Near-field-communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols for communication between two electronic devices at a distance of 4 cm or less.

As a safer payment option during the COVID-19 pandemic, UnionPay International has been pushing for contactless and online payment solutions throughout the region and around the world in a bid to protect customers at the checkout.

All point of sale (POS) terminals of the bank will provide a contactless payment service. The bank’s 15,000 NFC terminals are spread across several sectors and types of facilities, including hospitals, hotels, government agencies, supermarkets and so on.

The available payment services include UnionPay contactless payment via UnionPay chip cards, as well as Mobile QuickPass payment interfaces such as Apple Pay and Huawei Pay. The contactless payment limit has also been raised to $136 (AED500) to promote wider usage during this period.

These initiatives are among the key approaches of UnionPay International to tackle the virus spread at checkout across the globe, by improving the convenience and usability of online and contactless payments.

Parallelly, UnionPay International is continuing to offer more facilities and benefits to local partners. It has introduced policies to improve the versatility of the local merchant’s chargeback window to help alleviate the financial burden of merchants affected by the pandemic situation.
