The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Saudi Arabia’s megacity project NEOM have partnered for a new initiative focused on the Kingdom’s tourism future.

A competition named ‘Tourism Experiences of the Future’ will source innovative ideas and disruptive business models related to the tourism needs of the future, in line with the growing demand for new experiences.

The competition is Saudi Arabia’s first national effort aimed at identifying innovative businesses that will lead the country’s tourism revolution. In addition to established companies, the competition encourages proposals from Saudi Arabian start-ups and innovators with ideas capable of modernizing and inspiring tourists by presenting new means and reasons to travel.

According to the two entities, all proposals for the challenges must be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and should include the introduction or adaptation of digital and technological elements, as well as being focused on at least one of the following areas, like optimizing and maximizing the potential of experiential tourism, harnessing the positive impact of new technology, alternative business models, innovative experiences.

Applications are open until October 24 and participants must be Saudi citizens with the legal capacity to enter into a contract. Successful projects will be selected based on various criteria, such as the degree of innovation, their viability and sustainability.

Since 2019, NEOM has been an Affiliate Member of the UNWTO. It is a catalyst for human progress and a vision of what a new future might look like. Located in northwest Saudi Arabia along the Red Sea, NEOM is strategically situated at the crossroads of the world, with a total area of 26,500 square kilometers. A special authority, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been established to oversee NEOM.
