The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has launched the Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy, allowing customers to boost daytime electricity efficiency and rely more on clean, renewable energy through smart, flexible solutions.
The launch of Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy is part of Abu Dhabi’s push, led by the Department of Energy, to transform energy generation and consumption in line with the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030.
The policy also aims to raise public awareness about responsible electricity use and support the national shift toward clean, renewable energy, especially in sectors that rely heavily on electricity.
Alongside the Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy, the DoE will release a guidance manual on high-efficiency appliances to help households, businesses, and institutions optimize energy use. The manual offers practical, user-focused advice on selecting, purchasing, and operating energy-efficient systems, covering cooling, water heating, lighting, motors, pumps, and irrigation. It promotes smart control solutions, data-driven decision-making, and best-practice operational behavior to reduce energy and water use, lower peak demand, cut costs, and support emissions reduction.
Under the new policy, customers can adopt flexible solutions, like photovoltaic panels, solar water heaters, and battery storage, or continue using the grid. These options boost solar energy use, improve grid efficiency, and support Abu Dhabi’s clean energy goals.
The Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy will first target the agricultural sector and owners of rest houses and ranches, making renewable energy more accessible. Consumers can save significantly by using solar panels, water heaters, and battery systems to power facilities, even after sunset.
Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Obaidli Director General – Regulatory Affairs, Abu Dhabi DoE
“We are pleased to announce the launch of the Photovoltaic Energy Self-Supply Policy in Abu Dhabi, which represents one of the most significant policies governing the sector. The policy reinforces our efforts to establish a strategic mix of energy generation sources, particularly renewable energy, and enables the local community to play a key role in supporting national efforts to achieve the ambitious targets set out in the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030.
HE Al Obaidli added that, “At DoE, we design policies and introduce solutions that deliver direct value to the sector and are scalable over the long term. Through these solutions, we ensure the efficiency, resilience, and future readiness of infrastructure, while also contributing to increased public awareness of the importance of environmentally sound, socially responsible, and economically viable energy consumption.”
The new Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy is part of a broader set of initiatives supporting sector sustainability, including the Energy Efficiency Appliances Policy and upcoming 2026 policies. It aligns with the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy to boost clean energy use, cut emissions, improve efficiency, and ensure reliable, cost-effective services.
