The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Novo Nordisk, the global healthcare company, to enhance cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The agreement will support the adoption of advanced technologies and contribute to the development of a sustainable pharmaceutical ecosystem in the UAE.

It forms part of ongoing efforts to advance the country’s pharmaceutical sector through closer engagement between regulatory authorities and global healthcare companies, while aligning with national priorities related to healthcare infrastructure, innovation, and supply chain resilience.

Under the memorandum, both parties will work on pharmaceutical manufacturing initiatives and explore opportunities to increase in-country value.

The cooperation will focus on improving supply chain security and expanding initiatives that help ensure the continuous availability of medicines across the UAE.

The MoU is also expected to contribute to healthcare sector readiness by promoting reliable pharmaceutical supplies and deeper engagement between public and private sector stakeholders.

Focus on talent development

A key component of the memorandum involves talent development and capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing national capabilities within the pharmaceutical industry.

The initiative includes training, knowledge exchange, and professional development programs.

It will also provide Emirati professionals and students with opportunities to participate in academic programs, internships, and practical training experiences across the pharmaceutical sector.

These efforts are intended to support workforce development and prepare future talent for careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing, research, and healthcare innovation.

Supporting innovation and research

The memorandum also outlines areas of cooperation in innovation, research, and development. Both parties will seek to foster a regulatory environment that facilitates the introduction of innovative therapies and broadens patient access to advanced treatments.

In addition, the initiative aims to increase the participation of UAE-based institutions, researchers, and stakeholders in product development activities and research projects related to Novo Nordisk’s areas of expertise, including diabetes, obesity, and rare diseases.

The MoU further provides a framework for scientific cooperation and research activities that contribute to the advancement of healthcare solutions and pharmaceutical innovation in the UAE.
