The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism of the Sultanate of Oman has signed a strategic agreement to develop and operate Sumharam Archaeological Park at Khor Rori site in the Dhofar Governorate.
The agreement, signed with Sumharam Tourism Investment Company, aims to promote sustainable tourism investment while preserving and showcasing Oman’s rich cultural heritage. It was formally inked by Sayyid Ibrahim bin Said Al Busaidi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, and Eng. Hilal bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sumharam Tourism Investment Company.
The project focuses on developing the centuries-old city of Sumharam, one of the iconic Land of Frankincense sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, into a major global tourist destination that seamlessly blends historical significance with natural beauty.
This initiative represents a significant step in elevating the status of Dhofar Governorate as one of Oman’s most prominent and attractive tourist regions.
Sumharam project: Preserving history, Boosting tourism
The Sumharam development plan includes the establishment of integrated tourism facilities such as luxury hotels and resorts, dedicated culture and heritage centers, and adventure tourism hotspots for eco-friendly nature exploration. Additionally, the project will feature complementary amenities including high-quality restaurants, traditional craft centers, and venues for cultural events that authentically reflect the Omani identity and heritage.
Key economic benefits
Beyond tourism, the Sumharam project is designed to create substantial economic benefits for Oman by supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within the tourism and hospitality sectors, attracting private investment, and generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for residents of Dhofar Governorate.
It ensures that the local community is actively involved in, and benefits from, economic activities associated with the project, while reinforcing Oman’s position as a sustainable and culturally rich travel destination.
