Ooredoo has become the first operator in Qatar to launch LTE-M (Long Term Evolution for Machines), also known as CAT-M1, marking a key milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.

The rollout follows extensive testing and successful deployment, positioning Qatar at the forefront of advanced IoT infrastructure. The next-generation network technology is purpose-built to support large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) deployments.

LTE-M, a low-power wide-area (LPWA) technology, is specifically designed for machine-type communications, delivering reliable and efficient connectivity for devices such as sensors, trackers, and wearables. It is particularly suited for low-power, low-data applications operating at scale.

Enabling scalable IoT solutions

The introduction of LTE-M is expected to unlock a wide range of use cases across industries, including smart city services, smart metering, asset tracking, supply chain management, and security monitoring.

Key sectors set to benefit include transport and logistics, utilities, oil and gas, healthcare, banking, and industrial safety.

LTE-M’s core capabilities include extended battery life, lasting up to 10 years for compatible devices; deep indoor and underground coverage; low latency, enabling near real-time communication; and full mobility for tracking moving assets such as vehicles and shipments. These features collectively support scalable, energy-efficient, and future-ready IoT deployments.

Hassan Ismail Al Emadi, Chief Business Officer at Ooredoo Qatar, said that, “The launch of LTE-M marks another key milestone in our journey to drive Qatar’s digital transformation. It opens new possibilities for businesses by providing the backbone for next-generation IoT solutions—from smart cities to industrial automation—while reinforcing our commitment to innovation and to supporting Qatar National Vision 2030.”

With the addition of LTE-M to its existing suite of technologies, including 4G, 5G, and NB-IoT, Ooredoo has further strengthened its Managed IoT Connect portfolio.

The move enhances its ability to deliver comprehensive connectivity solutions tailored to evolving business needs.

The deployment also supports the transition away from legacy 2G and 3G networks, ensuring long-term scalability and reliability for IoT ecosystems.

As industries increasingly adopt connected technologies, LTE-M is expected to play a critical role in enabling smarter infrastructure, sustainable urban development, and data-driven economic growth.
