Rolls-Royce has secured a major order to supply 50 mtu Series 4000 engines for high-speed trains in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant boost to the country’s rail network.
The engines will power ten high-speed trains operating on the Dammam–Riyadh route, which will reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. Four of the trains will undergo extensive testing and approval runs in Europe and Saudi Arabia before entering full service.
The mtu Series 4000 engines, renowned for their performance in challenging conditions, will be used in diesel-powered passenger trains in the region. Since 2012, over 70 12V 4000 engines have been operational in similar trains managed by Saudi Arabia Railways. These engines have proven their reliability in extreme conditions, including temperatures exceeding 50°C and desert dust, which often affect the trains’ operations.
Christopher Weckbecker, Director Global Rail at Rolls-Royce, said that, “They ensure smooth operation despite extreme ambient conditions with temperatures above 50°c and the influence of desert dust. Under these conditions, reliable air conditioning alone is essential for the survival of train passengers and personnel.”
The Director added that, “We are delighted that all diesel-powered passenger trains on the Arabian peninsula are powered by mtu Series 4000 engines, this is a strong vote of confidence in our outstanding products. At the same time, this order supports our strategy by expanding further into regional growth markets, enlarging Rolls-Royce’s global footprint in rail application.”
The order includes 50 12V 4000 R64 mtu engines, each with a 1,500 kW output. Four engines will power each of the ten high-speed trains, with additional engines reserved for maintenance and spare units. The contract with Stadler Bussnang AG, one of the world’s leading rail vehicle manufacturers, also includes an option for 40 more engines for another ten trains.

Tobias Arnold, Commercial Project Lead at Stadler stated that, “For us, mtu propulsion technology from Rolls-Royce is a central component in this project. It not only enables high speeds, but also meets the highest standards of environmental compatibility, energy efficiency and operational safety.”
This partnership between Rolls-Royce and Stadler aligns with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to improving its transportation infrastructure and expanding its rail network, significantly enhancing both regional connectivity and operational efficiency.
