Saudi Arabia has extended a grant to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to support the ‘Green Pakistan’ initiative, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, improving water-use efficiency, and strengthening food security through sustainable farming practices.
The Saudi delegation was led by Assistant Deputy Minister for Agriculture Affairs Dr. Sulaiman AlKhateeb, underscoring the Kingdom’s continued engagement in advancing development cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in the agricultural sector.
The initiative is also expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to environmental preservation efforts.
Focus on modern irrigation and high productivity
The project spans 500 hectares and includes the installation of 10 center pivot irrigation systems, along with fertilization units, generators, and power engines.
These upgrades are designed to improve both the quality and quantity of agricultural output, expand irrigated farmland, and support crop diversification.
In addition, the initiative aims to reduce water wastage and enhance overall resource efficiency in line with sustainable development goals.
A key feature of the program includes a dedicated training component for Pakistani agricultural specialists. The training will focus on the operation and management of modern irrigation systems, ensuring long-term sustainability and local expertise in managing advanced agricultural infrastructure.
The project will primarily benefit regions in Punjab Province, including Bahawalnagar, where agriculture remains a critical source of livelihoods and economic activity.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation
The initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting partner countries in addressing environmental challenges, improving agricultural resilience, and enhancing food security outcomes. It also aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable development and reduce pressure on natural resources.
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan continue to explore expanded economic cooperation through a framework agreement covering key sectors such as energy, industry, mining, information technology, tourism, agriculture, and food security. Both sides are also working on advancing electrical interconnection projects to further strengthen long-term economic integration.
