Saudi Arabia has been elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to serve on the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) for the 2027–2030 term.
The appointment reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing international influence in the fields of science, emerging technologies, digital governance, and innovation-driven development.
The Kingdom, represented by the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST), has increasingly positioned itself as an active contributor to international discussions on artificial intelligence, data governance, and digital transformation initiatives linked to the Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the commission, Saudi Arabia’s membership in the CSTD will support global efforts to monitor the implementation of outcomes from the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the Global Digital Compact (GDC).
The Kingdom will also participate in drafting policy recommendations related to technology and digital cooperation that will be submitted to the United Nations General Assembly for adoption.
The commission said that the achievement was secured in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the Kingdom’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence within the United Nations system, particularly across communications, technology, and space sectors.
Saudi Arabia’s growing international standing in digital development has been reflected in previous leadership roles within the commission.
In 2022, Saudi Arabia, represented by CST, chaired the 25th session of the CSTD, underscoring international confidence in its leadership and expanding influence in global digital policy discussions.
The appointment supports Saudi’s ongoing efforts to expand innovation, develop technology sectors, and contribute to international digital economy initiatives.
