Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah’s Department of Government Relations (DGR), hosted a high-level delegation from Guatemala, led by Mr. Antonio Malouf, Minister of Economy, to explore economic collaboration and strengthen the framework of commercial and investment partnerships between the two entities.

The meeting reviewed strategies to improve trade exchange relations and mutual investment opportunities in vital sectors such as tourism, food security, and sustainable waste management, among others, as well as to develop stronger cultural ties.

Mr. Antonio Malouf, who is also the head of the Guatemalan delegation at the ongoing Expo 2020 Dubai, was accompanied by Mr. Lars Pira, Ambassador of Guatemala in UAE, high-ranking officials representing the government of Guatemala, and senior members of the Guatemalan embassy in the UAE.

Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi emphasized the ever-evolving bilateral relations between the UAE and Central American countries and stressed that these historical ties serve as a solid foundation for boosting cooperation in key sectors and that this meeting will allow investors from both sides to take advantage of the favorable investment environment in Sharjah and Guatemala to expand their businesses.

“We see our close bonds with nations of the world as a great opportunity to bolster cultural exchange between peoples. Economic cooperation and partnerships not only yield high revenues and impact GDP but also brings people and cultures together in solidarity. Nations cannot complete their cultural journeys or establish their unique identities unless they communicate and interact with other civilizations and develop deep and strong human connections.”

Sharjah’s advanced infrastructure, logistics capabilities, and strategic location at the center of major global markets offer it a significant competitive advantage. This can be complemented by Guatemala’s immense potential in a variety of industries, particularly in agribusiness, said Mr. Antonio Malouf.

On September 15, 2021, DGR sponsored a week-long bicentennial celebration at the House of Wisdom to highlight Guatemala’s culture and diversity in recognition of the country’s 200th year of independence.
