Mr. Hamid AlZaabi, Director-General of the UAE’s Executive Office of Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing (EO AML/CTF), has discussed ways to improve cooperation with Dr. Jawhar Al-Nafisi, Chairman of the Moroccan Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

Mr. AlZaabi met Dr. Al-Nafisi on the sidelines of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF) meeting.

Further, the meeting agenda included a review of current cooperation between the UAE and Morocco as well as a discussion on ways to further promote collaboration between the countries.

According to the statement, “It also addressed efforts to ensure sustainability and effectiveness in combatting money laundering and terrorist financing, as well as enhance the security of financial and economic systems in the two countries in particular and the Middle East and North Africa region in general.”

The two parties also discussed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the EO AML/CTF and Moroccan FIU. This MoU intends to further enhance coordination on a number of key projects, such as public-private sector partnerships and virtual assets, in addition to holding joint training and outreach workshops.

The meeting was also attended by Mr. Talal Al Tunaiji, Director of the Executive Office for Control and Non-Proliferation, Judge Abdul Rahman Murad Al Balushi, Acting Assistant Under-Secretary for Legal Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Justice, and other officials.

Last month, UAE’s EO AML/CTF signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) in order to facilitate the exchange of information through the FAWRI TICK system.
